MMA in Bangkok — For Everyone, From Day One

Whether you have never thrown a punch in your life or you are preparing for your first amateur fight — you belong here. At Mastery Martial Arts in Phutthamonthon, you train MMA under Coach Kyo — BJJ Purple Belt, Thai National MMA Coach, and the man who coached World Champion Coach Amp.

What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing combat sport in the world. It is a complete fighting system that combines the best techniques from multiple martial arts disciplines — including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo — into one comprehensive fighting style.

MMA athletes must be well-rounded fighters, comfortable striking on their feet, clinching against the cage, taking the fight to the ground, and submitting opponents. This makes MMA one of the most complete physical and mental challenges in all of sport.

Despite its reputation, MMA training is excellent for all fitness levels and ages. The conditioning, coordination, and confidence you build through MMA training are benefits that go far beyond the gym — whether you ever compete or not.

A Brief History of MMA

The roots of MMA go back thousands of years to ancient Greek Pankration — a combat sport combining wrestling and striking. In modern times, MMA gained worldwide attention through the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), founded in 1993, which pitted fighters from different martial arts disciplines against each other to find the most effective fighting style. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, represented by Royce Gracie, dominated the early UFCs — proving that ground fighting and submission grappling could defeat larger striking-based opponents.

Today MMA is a fully regulated sport with professional leagues across the globe including the UFC, ONE Championship, Bellator, and RIZIN. In Thailand, organizations like TAMMA (Thai Amateur MMA Association) have developed a thriving amateur and professional MMA scene.

Frequently Asked Questions — MMA in Bangkok

Do I need experience to start MMA?
No. Our MMA fundamentals classes are designed for complete beginners. You will learn striking, clinch work, takedowns, and ground fighting from scratch in a safe and structured environment. Many of our students had zero martial arts experience when they started.

Is MMA dangerous for beginners?
MMA training is very safe when done correctly with proper instruction and equipment. Beginners do not spar at full intensity — we build skills progressively and safely. Coach Kyo prioritizes safety and correct technique above all else.

What equipment do I need for MMA?
For your first class, just wear comfortable workout clothes. As you progress you will need MMA gloves, shin guards, a mouthguard, and a rashguard. We can advise you on where to get good quality gear in Bangkok at a reasonable price.

Can MMA help with self-defense?
Absolutely. MMA is arguably the most complete self-defense system available because it prepares you for every range of combat — standing, clinching, and on the ground. The situational awareness and physical conditioning you develop also make you far more capable of handling real-world situations.

Do I need to know BJJ before starting MMA?
No — but training BJJ alongside MMA will accelerate your progress significantly. At Mastery Martial Arts you can train both simultaneously, which is the most efficient path to becoming a well-rounded MMA fighter.

Where is Mastery Martial Arts located?
We are located in Phutthamonthon, Bangkok — at 11 Moo 18 Borommaratchachonnani Road, Sala Thammasop, Taweewattana, Bangkok 10170. Easy access from central Bangkok by car or motorcycle.
