What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based martial art and combat sport that teaches you to control and submit opponents using leverage, technique, and body mechanics — not size or strength. Developed from Judo by the Gracie family in Brazil, BJJ has become the foundation of modern mixed martial arts (MMA) and one of the most effective self-defense systems in the world.
BJJ focuses on taking the fight to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and finishing with joint locks or choke holds. The beauty of BJJ is that a smaller, lighter person can defeat a bigger, stronger opponent through superior technique — making it ideal for men, women, and children of all sizes and fitness levels.
In Thailand, BJJ is rapidly growing as more people discover its effectiveness for self-defense, fitness, and competition. Bangkok and surrounding areas now host regular tournaments, and Thai BJJ athletes are competing and winning on the world stage.
The Origins of BJJ — The Gracie Story
BJJ traces its roots to Japanese Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda, who emigrated to Brazil in the early 1900s and taught his ground fighting techniques to Carlos Gracie. Carlos and his brother Helio adapted and refined these techniques into what became Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a system designed for a smaller person to defeat a larger opponent using leverage and strategy rather than strength. The Gracie family dedicated generations to developing and spreading BJJ worldwide, and today it is practiced in over 100 countries.

Frequently Asked Questions — BJJ in Bangkok
Do I need experience to start BJJ?
No. Our fundamentals classes are designed specifically for beginners. You will learn everything from scratch — positions, escapes, submissions, and how to spar safely. Many of our students started with zero martial arts experience and now compete regularly.
Is BJJ good for self-defense?
Yes — BJJ is widely considered one of the most effective self-defense martial arts in the world. It teaches you to control a larger attacker on the ground and submit them without striking. It forms the foundation of MMA and is used by military and law enforcement worldwide.
What should I wear to my first BJJ class?
For your first class, comfortable workout clothes are fine. If you plan to continue, you will need a Gi for Gi classes or shorts and a rashguard for No-Gi. We can advise you on where to get equipment in Bangkok.
How long does it take to get a BJJ black belt?
On average, 10 to 15 years of consistent training. The BJJ belt system goes: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, then Black. Coach Amp achieved her black belt through years of dedicated competition and training at the highest level internationally.
Can women train BJJ?
Absolutely. BJJ is one of the best martial arts for women because it teaches you to overcome size and strength differences using technique and leverage. Coach Amp herself is living proof — a female world champion who has competed and won against the best in the world.
Do you have BJJ classes for kids in Bangkok?
Yes. Our youth monthly membership gives unlimited access to all disciplines including BJJ. Young athletes learn discipline, respect, and confidence along with practical technique in a safe environment.
