What is Judo?
Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport that focuses on throwing, takedowns, and ground control. The word Judo means “the gentle way” — reflecting its core philosophy of using your opponent’s energy and momentum against them rather than relying on brute strength.
Founded by Jigoro Kano in Japan in 1882, Judo was developed from traditional Japanese Jujutsu and became the first martial art to be included in the Olympic Games in 1964. Today Judo is practiced by millions of people in over 200 countries and remains one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world.
In competition, Judo matches are won by throwing the opponent to the ground with force and control, or by pinning them, or applying a choke or joint lock on the ground. Judo’s throwing techniques — called “nage-waza” — are among the most powerful and technically refined in all of martial arts.
In Thailand, Judo has a long history and is one of the country’s most successful Olympic sports. Thai Judo athletes have competed at the highest levels internationally, and the sport continues to grow in popularity across Bangkok and beyond.
The Connection Between Judo and BJJ
Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu share the same roots — BJJ was developed directly from Judo when master Mitsuyo Maeda brought Judo to Brazil in the early 1900s. Training both disciplines gives you a complete grappling system: Judo’s powerful throws to take the fight to the ground, and BJJ’s ground fighting to finish. This is exactly why Judo is a core part of the Mastery Martial Arts curriculum alongside BJJ and MMA.

Frequently Asked Questions — Judo in Bangkok
Do I need experience to start Judo?
No. Our Judo fundamentals classes start from the very beginning — how to fall safely, how to grip, and basic throwing techniques. Many of our students had zero martial arts experience when they started and are now competing regularly.
Is Judo good for self-defense?
Yes. Judo’s throwing techniques are extremely effective in real-world situations. Being able to throw or take down an attacker is a powerful self-defense skill. Judo also teaches you how to fall safely — a skill that is useful in everyday life.
What is the difference between Judo and BJJ?
Judo focuses primarily on throwing and takedowns, while BJJ focuses on ground fighting and submissions. They complement each other perfectly — Judo gets the fight to the ground, BJJ finishes it. At Mastery Martial Arts you can train both simultaneously.
Can children train Judo?
Absolutely. Judo is one of the best martial arts for children. It teaches discipline, respect, falling safely, and how to work with others. Our youth monthly membership includes Judo alongside BJJ and MMA.
Is Judo useful for MMA?
Very much so. Judo throws are some of the most spectacular and effective takedowns in MMA. Fighters like Ronda Rousey, Fedor Emelianenko, and many others have used Judo-based takedowns to dominate in MMA. Adding Judo to your MMA game gives you a significant advantage.
